Why people stay in Dragalevtsi
Dragalevtsi is a foothill village on Vitosha's northern flank, absorbed into Sofia's municipality but with a distinct village character — winding lanes, walled gardens, forest right at the top of the street. The Dragalevtsi chairlift (currently intermittent) climbs to Bai Krastyo and connects with the Aleko ski area higher up. The 14th-century Dragalevtsi Monastery sits in the woods 20 minutes' walk above the village.
Suits hikers, couples, families with older children, and travellers who want quiet forest air without renting a car. Skip it if you want city life on the doorstep — you are a 20-minute bus ride from the nearest metro. Prices for a small hotel are $55 to $90. Restaurants are mostly traditional mehanas serving grilled meat and rakia; kitchens close by 22:00. Bring layers even in July, the village is 200 metres above the city.
The village core along Zdravets, Boryana and Traychо Kitanchev has small hotels and guesthouses at $55 to $95. Avoid anything on Simeonovsko Shose (the main road into the village) — noisy. Ask whether the hotel has a garden or terrace — much of the appeal here is sitting outside in the evening. Confirm heating in winter and whether the property is walking distance from the chairlift base if you want to ski.
Things to do in Dragalevtsi
14th-century Orthodox monastery, 20 minutes' walk uphill from the village. Simple frescoes, working nuns, free entry. Small cafe at the entrance $2 for coffee. Marked trail from the top of Boryana street.
Ride the Dragalevtsi chairlift up to 1500 m for a modest hike or coffee at the mid-station hut. Check operation before going — often runs weekends only. $6 to $8 return. Not for anyone afraid of exposed chairlift rides.
Simeonovsko Shose 24. Classic Bulgarian mehana with folk music (usually loud, 20:00 onwards). Mains $8 to $14, whole spit-roast lamb portion $15. Book Friday and Saturday. Open 12:00 to 23:30.
3-hour walk from Dragalevtsi up through the forest to Kopitoto (1348 m) with its Cold War-era TV tower. Marked trail from the top of the village. Cafe at the top. Return via chairlift or same route.

Getting around Dragalevtsi
Bus 66 from G. M. Dimitrov metro (M1) runs to Dragalevtsi in 20 minutes for $0.90, every 20 to 30 minutes 06:00 to 22:00. From the airport, metro plus bus takes about 55 minutes total; taxi is $22 to $30 direct. Inside the village walking is fine but streets are steep. Taxis inside the village are hard to hail — book by phone or arrange with the hotel.
