Day trip to Plovdiv from Sofia-Grad
Bulgaria's second city sits 90 minutes east on the Trakia motorway. One day gets you the Roman theatre, Kapana, and back in Sofia by 9pm.

Getting there
Train from Sofia Central at 8:00am, arrives Plovdiv 10:30am, $10 second class or $14 first. Buses from Serdika bus terminal run every 30 minutes, $9, 2 hours if traffic holds. Driving the A1 is 145km, tolls about $5, and parking in Plovdiv centre is $2 an hour at Central Square garage. The train is the calmest option.
What to see in one day
Walk up to the Old Town: the Roman theatre ($3), Ethnographic Museum ($3), and the pastel National Revival houses of Nebet Tepe are all inside a 20-minute radius. Descend to Kapana, the creative quarter, for coffee at Monkey House, $2.50. The Roman Stadium ruins under Dzhumaya Square are free to view from street level.
Lunch at Pavaj on Zlatarska, small plates around $8. Afternoon at the Regional Archaeological Museum ($4) or a wine tasting at Villa Yustina's Plovdiv tasting room, $18 for six pours.
Eat and drink
Pavaj for modern Bulgarian, Hemingway on Gurko for a smart dinner ($25), or Rahat Tepe for cheap kebapche with a view. Cocktails at Cat & Mouse in Kapana, $6. If you want to catch a late train back, aim for the 7:50pm to Sofia Central.
