Why people stay in Serdika
Serdika is less a neighbourhood than the crossing point where every metro line meets, every tram passes, and 2000 years of Sofia sit on top of each other. The Roman street excavated in the metro underpass is genuinely one of the best in-situ ruins in Europe and it is free. Above ground the district is TZUM department store, the former Communist Party House, and a strip of chain hotels and business rentals between Sveta Nedelya Square and Serdika station.
This is where to stay if you have one night in Sofia, or if you are catching a 05:30 flight and want to be near the M4 line. It is dull in the evenings — most of the buildings are offices, and the crowd empties by 20:00. A double room runs $55 to $95 depending on chain versus boutique. Do not expect atmosphere; do expect being able to walk to everything in under 15 minutes.
The compact grid between Sveta Nedelya, Todor Aleksandrov and the Largo has the newest 3-star and 4-star hotels — $60 to $110. Streets like Lavele and Trapezitsa are quieter than they look on a map. Anything on Todor Aleksandrov itself is busy with traffic 24 hours. If you are on a red-eye, the Best Western on Todor Aleksandrov 131 is 3 minutes from Serdika metro and reasonable at $70.
Things to do in Serdika
Free open-air ruins between Serdika 1 metro exit and Sveta Nedelya. Roman streets, an amphitheatre foundation, thermal bath remnants — all excavated during metro construction and left in place under glass. Best light 15:00 to 17:00.
The main Orthodox cathedral on the square of the same name. Free entry, working church so no photos during services. The 1925 assassination attempt against Tsar Boris III blew off the dome — the current one is the reconstruction.
Bulgaria's oldest building, 4th century, tucked in the courtyard of the Presidency. Enter from the north side of the Sheraton complex. Free, open 08:00 to 18:00. Frescoes inside are original 10th to 14th century.
On Marie-Louise, opposite the Banya Bashi mosque. Two floors, cheese counters on the ground floor ($5 to $10 a kilo), lunch counters upstairs for $4 to $6. Open 07:00 to 22:00, quieter after 15:00.

Getting around Serdika
Serdika station is the intersection of M1, M2 and (via a two-minute underground walk to Serdika 2) M4. M4 direct to Sofia Airport Terminal 2 is 22 minutes, $0.90. Central Railway Station is one stop north on M2, 3 minutes. Trams 1, 6 and 7 also pass. This is the easiest arrival point in the city. Inside the district everything is walkable.
