Day 1: the yellow-brick core
Start at Ploshtad Sveta Nedelya and walk east along the yellow paving of Tsar Osvoboditel. You will pass the Presidency, the excavated ruins of Serdica, and the Rotunda of St George in a single 15-minute loop, all free. Coffee at Dabov Specialty Coffee on Angel Kanchev runs about $3. Continue to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral by 11am before tour buses arrive; the crypt icon museum is $5 and worth it.
Lunch at Made in Home on Angel Kanchev, around $14 for a shakshuka and lemonade. Afternoon: Sofia History Museum in the old mineral baths building on Banski Ploshtad, entry $3. Day 2: markets, Boyana, Vitosha
Breakfast at Furna on Solunska, $4 for a banitsa and boza or ayran. Walk to the Central Market Hall (Tsentralni Hali) and the adjoining Sveta Nedelya synagogue, then across to Zhenski Pazar, the women's market, for produce, olives, and cheap lunch of grilled kebapche for about $5.
Afternoon: bus 64 or 107 from Hladilnika to Boyana Church, a UNESCO site with 13th-century frescoes, entry $5. Continue up to the National History Museum next door, $5. If weather holds, taxi to Aleko on Vitosha (about $18) for sunset over the city. Dinner back in Sofia at Hadjidraganov's Cellars, mains around $12.
Where to base yourself
For 48 hours, stay inside the yellow-brick zone between Serdica metro and NDK. Sense Hotel on Tsar Osvoboditel has rooftop views for around $130 a night, but budget travellers do better at Hostel Mostel (dorms $18, private doubles $45 with breakfast and a free dinner) or R34 Boutique Rooms near the synagogue at $48. Anything beyond Levski Boulevard adds a metro ride to every plan, which is fine but eats into a short trip.
