Day trip to Vitosha Mountain from Sofia-Grad

How to get up there
For Boyana: bus 64 or 107 from Hladilnika (end of metro line 2). For Zlatnite Mostove and the western trails: bus 63 from Ovcha Kupel. For Aleko and the Cherni Vrah summit: bus 66 from Hladilnika, weekends only, or a $18 taxi. The Simeonovo gondola to Aleko runs weekends year-round, $10 return.
Three walk options
Boyana Waterfall loop: 3 hours, 400m ascent, easy-moderate, starts at Boyana Church car park. Zlatnite Mostove to Kamen Del: 4 hours through the famous stone river, moderate. Aleko to Cherni Vrah summit: 2 hours up, 1.5 down, exposed and windy — bring layers. Cherni Vrah at 2290m is the second-highest peak in Vitosha and gives a full Sofia panorama.
Huts along all routes serve bean soup ($4), meatball soup ($5), and Kamenitza beer ($3).
What to know
Vitosha weather turns fast. Snow lingers in gullies into May; thunderstorms build after 2pm in July. Start early, carry water (springs are unreliable), and stick to marked trails — winter search-and-rescue call-outs on Vitosha are frequent. Boyana Church is not on the mountain proper but at its foot, so combine church visit with the waterfall walk for a satisfying half-day.
