What to expect at Banya Bashi Mosque
Banya Bashi means many baths, and the mosque takes its name from the Sofia mineral springs that still bubble up beneath its foundations — you can see steam rising from the drinking taps in the small park outside on cold mornings. Built in 1566, it is the last of Sofia's Ottoman mosques still in use; there were once seventy. It was designed, at least in blueprint, by Mimar Sinan, the imperial architect responsible for the Suleymaniye in Istanbul and the Selimiye in Edirne. A single minaret, a broad dome, and a portico of three smaller domes on the north side.
Inside, the space is calm and light in a way none of Sofia's Orthodox churches quite are — whitewashed walls, red carpets, natural light through 22 windows in the drum, calligraphy medallions in blue and gold. Visitors are welcome outside the five daily prayer times; women receive a headscarf at the door and everyone removes shoes. Sofia's Muslim community is small — mostly Turkish and Roma Bulgarians and a growing number of students from the Middle East — but Friday prayers still fill the space and spill onto the pavement.
The mosque sits at the heart of Sofia's tolerance square, a hundred metres from the Rotunda, the Synagogue and Sveta Nedelya. Combine all four in an easy 90-minute walk. The Central Mineral Baths building next door has been converted into the Sofia History Museum, worth another hour. Do not visit during Friday 12:00-13:30 prayer, and dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — even outside prayer times. The Zhenski Pazar market is a five-minute walk north for lunch.
