What to expect at Sveta Nedelya Church

Sveta Nedelya — Holy Sunday — stands at the exact geographic centre of Sofia, on the square where six major boulevards meet. A church has been on this spot since the 10th century, but the current cross-domed structure dates from 1856-1863, and its recent history includes one of Europe's most notorious 20th-century terror attacks. On 16 April 1925, communist militants blew up the roof during the funeral of General Konstantin Georgiev, aiming to assassinate King Boris III and the entire Bulgarian political leadership at once. 150 people died; the king survived, having arrived late. The church was rebuilt by 1933.

Inside, the atmosphere is working-Orthodox rather than tourist-Orthodox: pensioners lighting candles, priests hearing confessions in the side chapels, chanted liturgy filling the dome twice a day. The iconostasis is carved lime wood with gold leaf; the murals are 1970s but skilful. The relics of Serbian King Stefan Milutin, who died in 1321, are kept in a silver reliquary near the north wall and are one of the most venerated objects in the Balkans. Locals kiss the glass and cross themselves before continuing across Sveta Nedelya Square.

This is your first-stop church, right at the exit of Serdika metro and directly on the walking route between Vitosha Boulevard and the Rotunda. Come during a liturgy — 9:00 Sunday, 18:00 daily — for the chanting, but stand at the back and stay quiet. The souvenir kiosk sells excellent hand-painted icons for $12-30 that are better value than anything in the Ladies' Market. Vitosha Boulevard's cafes and Sofia's cheapest hotel stretch are both a three-minute walk south, useful if you are staying in the under-$50 range.
