Day trip to Koprivshtitsa from Sofia-Grad
A 19th-century revival village 110km east of Sofia, frozen in the year of the 1876 April Uprising. Six house-museums, one $6 ticket.

Getting there
Bus from Poduyane bus station (metro Vasil Levski Stadium then walk 10 minutes) at 8:40am, $8, 2 hours. Return bus 5:00pm. Train works too but the station is 9km from the village, requiring a $6 taxi transfer, so skip it. Driving the A1 and turning off at Pirdop takes 90 minutes, parking in the village is free.
What to see
The combined ticket ($6) covers Oslekov House, Kableshkov House, Karavelov House, Benkovski House, Debelyanov House and the ethnographic collection. Each is a preserved merchant home with painted wooden ceilings, Ottoman-era furniture and stories from the April Uprising. Add the Church of the Holy Virgin, free. The whole loop is 4-5 hours on foot; the village is compact and hilly.
Eat at Djado Liben, a mehana in an 1852 house on the main square: kavarma stew $8, homemade wine $3 a glass.
When to go
Weekends are livelier; Sundays have small handicraft markets. Every 5 years (next 2025) Koprivshtitsa hosts the National Folklore Festival, when 10,000 performers descend on the hills — book everything months ahead. In winter the village is snowy and beautiful but half the museums close on Mondays year-round.
