Sleep: design not luxury
Sofia does not really do five-star; it does excellent boutique. Sense Hotel on Tsar Osvoboditel is the best rooftop in the city, doubles from $130 with a view of the Cathedral. Sofia Hotel Balkan (Luxury Collection) at $180 is the grand old dame on Sveta Nedelya square. For something quieter, Arte Hotel on Dondukov runs $95 and has honest 4-star rooms with good beds. All three sit inside the yellow-brick core.
Day 1: art and Cosmos
