Boyana is where old Sofia money moved in the 1990s and 2000s — a leafy village-turned-suburb at the foot of Mount Vitosha, with the 13th-century Boyana Church (UNESCO) and Bulgaria's National History Museum as its main draws. Lanes are narrow, houses are big, walls are high, and everything is 15 to 20 minutes from central Sofia by taxi. The village core around the church has a handful of small restaurants and one very good bakery.
Suits families, culture visitors and anyone who wants a genuinely quiet base within striking distance of the city. Skip it if you want to walk out of the hotel into a bar or a metro — no metro, and the two decent restaurants close at 22:00. Prices for a small hotel or guesthouse are $60 to $110; luxury properties higher. Confirm airport transfer arrangements before arriving — taxis at 06:00 from Boyana can be tricky to hail.
The best hotels are in the core village, streets like Boyansko Ezero, Serdika and Manastirska. Small boutique properties at $70 to $120, family-run guesthouses at $50 to $80. Avoid anything on Kambanite (main road into the village) — traffic in the morning is heavy. Ask about parking (usually free but limited to the property's own gate). The village slopes up towards the mountain — check whether your hotel has a hill walk to the road.

13th-century frescoes considered a precursor to European Renaissance painting. Small building, entry $5, timed tickets in summer to protect the frescoes — visits limited to 10 minutes inside. Open 09:00 to 17:30, closed one day varies. Photography forbidden.
Housed in a former state residence, 5 minutes from the church. Bulgaria's largest museum — Thracian gold, medieval icons, communist-era rooms. $6 entry, allow 2 hours. Open 09:30 to 18:00 daily.
90 minutes each way on a marked trail from the church car park. 15-metre waterfall, forested walk, moderate difficulty. Best May to June. Free, always open. Bring water.

Getting around Boyana
No metro. Bus 64 from Hladilnika (near the M2 metro terminus at Vitosha) runs to Boyana in 15 minutes for $0.90. Bus 107 also serves the village. Taxi from central Sofia is $6 to $9, from the airport $18 to $25. Inside Boyana walking is fine but the village is on a slope — allow extra time up. Book a taxi ahead for early departures rather than trying to hail on the street.
