Why people stay in Lozenets
Lozenets sits just south of the centre, between Vitosha Boulevard and South Park, and it is where young Sofia moved when it could afford to leave the centre. The streets — Krastyo Sarafov, Zlaten Rog, Yakubitsa — are lined with 1930s and modern apartment blocks, ground floors converted to specialty coffee shops (Dabov, Fabrika Daga), wine bars and small design studios. It is walkable to Vitosha Boulevard in 15 minutes.
Good for a second or third visit, remote workers, and travellers who want to sleep in a residential area with real cafes instead of hotel breakfasts. Not a first-visit choice because you are 20 to 30 minutes on foot from the main sights. Prices for a double are $50 to $85, honest value. Nightlife is bar-focused rather than club-focused — plan to be walking home by 02:00 at the latest.
The best streets are between Cherni Vrah Boulevard and James Bourchier Boulevard: Zlaten Rog, Krastyo Sarafov, Yakubitsa. Small apartment-hotels and guesthouses at $50 to $80 dominate; there are almost no chains. James Bourchier metro (M1) is at the southern edge and gets you to the centre in 8 minutes. Avoid the blocks directly on Cherni Vrah — busy road, dust, tram noise from 05:00.

Enter from the west side at Prof. Fridtjof Nansen Boulevard. 3.5 km loop on paved paths, dog-friendly, plane trees, ponds. Best 07:00 to 09:00 or after 18:00 in summer.
Zlaten Rog 22. Ten Bulgarian wines by the glass ($4 to $8), no food beyond bread and cheese boards ($10). Open Wednesday to Saturday 18:00 to 24:00. Small, book ahead on weekends.
Lyuben Karavelov 45. Modern Bulgarian, mains $12 to $18, tasting menu $35. Open 12:00 to 23:00, closed Sundays. Book two days ahead for Friday and Saturday.

Getting around Lozenets
M1 metro at James Bourchier and European Union stations serves the southern and eastern edges — 8 minutes to Serdika, $0.90. From the airport it is M4 to Serdika then M1 south, 35 minutes total. Trams 6 and 7 run along Cherni Vrah. Walking to Vitosha Boulevard takes 15 minutes; taxi to the centre is $3 to $5. Inside Lozenets everything is on foot — the district is compact.
