Hostel Mostel on Denkoglu is the standard: dorm beds $18, private doubles $45, and a free vegetarian dinner and breakfast that alone save you $10 a day. Canapé Connection near NDK does dorms at $16. If you want a private room under $50, R34 Boutique Rooms at $48 or Sofia Dream Apartments studios on Tsar Simeon at $42 are honest bookings — real photos, no surprises.
Eat: three meals for $12
Breakfast: banitsa and boza at any Furna, $2. Lunch: kebapche and salad at Skara Bar or the Zhenski Pazar grills, $5. Dinner: bean soup and bread at Sun Moon on Solunska, $6, or shopska salad plus a plate of moussaka at Divaka, about $9 with a beer.
Never eat on Vitosha Boulevard proper unless it is Shtastlivetsa; the tourist-strip cafes charge $6 for coffee. Water is free from the mineral taps on Banski Ploshtad — bring a bottle.

Free Sofia Tour departs Palace of Justice at 10am, 11am, 2pm and 6pm daily; tip $8. Serdica ruins, the Rotunda, Alexander Nevsky exterior, Boyana park and Borisova Gradina all cost nothing. Pay only for Boyana Church ($5), the crypt icon museum ($5), and Sofia History Museum ($3). Total three-day sightseeing spend: about $18.
Move: a $5 transit card
A single metro or tram ticket is $0.90. A 24-hour all-modes pass is $2.20. Buy a 72-hour pass at any metro kiosk for $5. It covers airport metro line 4, buses to Boyana, and every tram. Taxis are cheap too if you insist on the meter: airport to centre is $8-10 with OK Supertrans or Yellow Taxi. Never take an unmarked cab at the airport arrivals curb.
