Day trip to Rila Monastery from Sofia-Grad
The 10th-century monastery sits 120km south in the Rila Mountains. Doable in one long day; the frescoes alone are worth the ride.

How to get there
The Rila Monastery Express bus leaves Sofia Central Bus Station daily at 10:20am, arrives 12:40pm, departs Rila 3:00pm, back in Sofia 6:20pm. Round trip $18, buy from window 12 the day before in summer. Alternatively, a shared minibus tour from Hostel Mostel or 365 Association is $30 including Boyana Church stop. Private driver: $130 for two people, flexible timing.
What to do on site
The monastery courtyard, church exterior frescoes and Hrelyo's Tower are all free. The church interior is free but no photography. Pay $5 for the Ethnographic Museum, which holds the Rila Cross, a wooden crucifix carved with 140 biblical scenes visible only through a magnifying glass. Hike 20 minutes uphill to St Ivan's Cave and hermitage for another free stop.
Lunch at the monastery kitchen or the bakery outside the walls: mekitsa (fried dough) $1, bean soup $4, grilled trout $10.
Pack for weather
Rila sits at 1150m. It is 8-10 degrees cooler than Sofia and can rain when the city is dry. Bring a layer even in July. Shoulders and knees must be covered inside the church; scarves and wraps are available free at the gate. Cash is useful — the museum and food stalls sometimes lose card signal.
