Why people stay in Krasna Polyana
Krasna Polyana sits west of the centre, between Vazrazhdane and Lyulin, and it is one of the older working-class districts — a mix of pre-war low-rises and 1960s co-op blocks. It has a large Roma community, a busy weekly market on Boliyarska, and the tram lines 22 and 3 running east to the centre in 15 to 20 minutes. It is cheap and unglamorous.
Suits budget travellers who do not mind rough edges, and long-stay visitors on tight budgets. Skip it if you are nervous walking through poorer streets, or if you want restaurants. The area has fewer working English speakers than any other district in this guide. Prices for a 3-star are $30 to $45, apartments from $25. Take taxis at night rather than walking, particularly west of Vardar Boulevard.
The eastern edge (near Konstantin Velichkov metro on M2) has the cleanest budget hotels and is 8 minutes to Serdika. Move west and prices drop but so does convenience. Streets like Slivnitsa and Todor Aleksandrov are the main axes. Avoid the blocks around Fakulteta (a specific Roma neighbourhood at the far south-west corner of the district) — not a tourist recommendation, both for your safety and because there is nothing there to see.
Things to do in Krasna Polyana
Weekly flea and produce market on Boliyarska street, Sundays 07:00 to 14:00. Second-hand tools, cheap produce, Roma vendors selling scrap electronics. Bargaining expected. Cash only. Not for the faint-hearted but genuinely local.
Board at Konstantin Velichkov metro end and ride tram 22 east into central Sofia via ploshtad Vazrazhdane. $0.90 single, buy from driver. A slow but revealing look at west-side Sofia at street level.

Getting around Krasna Polyana
M2 metro at Konstantin Velichkov station — 8 minutes to Serdika, $0.90. From the airport, M4 to Serdika then M2 west, 30 minutes total. Trams 22, 3 and 8 cross the district east to west. Inside Krasna Polyana, walking is not pleasant — take the tram or a taxi ($2 to $3 across the district). Bus 60 covers internal streets.
Questions about Krasna Polyana
The eastern half around Konstantin Velichkov metro is fine — normal working-class residential. The western half, particularly near Fakulteta, has more visible poverty and higher petty crime. Stick to the east or take taxis. Women alone at night — take a taxi even for short distances.
About $15 to $20 a night cheaper for equivalent quality, so worth considering for stays of a week or more. For 2 to 3 nights, the extra transport time outweighs the savings.
