What to expect at Zhenski Pazar (Women's Market)
Zhenski Pazar — literally the Women's Market — has traded on the same spot since the 1870s, named for the female vendors who traditionally sold produce here. Rebuilt in 2014 with proper stalls and covered walkways, it stretches for four blocks along Stefan Stambolov Street between the mosque and the Central Halls, and it is where Sofians actually shop. Tomatoes and peppers from the Thracian plain, feta cheese from Rhodope villages, honey from Vitosha beekeepers, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, spices sold by the scoop, and — in the covered side stalls — cheap lunches for less than the price of a coffee on Vitosha Boulevard.
Walk it end to end. The northern end is fruit and vegetables, priced by kilo in leva (about $1 for a kilo of tomatoes in season). The middle section is dairy — sheep's milk feta, kashkaval, katak yoghurt spread, all sold by weight from wooden barrels. The southern section is cooked food: banitsa (cheese-filled pastry, $1), grilled kebapche and pljeskavica ($3-4), soup of the day ($2), and Turkish desserts in the couple of Halal stalls near the mosque. Coffee at the small kiosks is 80 cents.
Come Saturday morning for the fullest market and the best atmosphere. Weekday mornings are calmer. Sunday closes at 14:00. Bring cash in small notes — most stalls do not take cards. This is the honest budget lunch spot for anyone staying in Sofia on under $50 a night; a full meal is easy under $5. Combine with the mosque and synagogue five minutes south, or the Lions Bridge and Sofia Central Station area to the north.
