What to expect at Vitosha Boulevard

Vitosha Boulevard — Vitoshka to everyone in Sofia — is the city's pedestrian spine, running north-south for one kilometre from Sveta Nedelya Square to South Park, with the wall of Vitosha mountain rising 2,290 metres directly behind it. Fully pedestrianised since 2010, it is lined with cafes whose terraces spill onto the paving, high-street shops, banks, and the occasional 19th-century Bulgarian Revival house squeezed between glass facades. This is where Sofians walk after work, where families come on Sundays, and where every visitor eventually ends up.

Start at Sveta Nedelya and walk south. The first three blocks are the shopping stretch — Zara, Mango, H&M, a handful of Bulgarian designers. Around the halfway point, the cafe density peaks: Rainbow Factory, Made in Home (also a restaurant), and the terrace of the old Grand Hotel Sofia for a more expensive coffee with a view. The last stretch, closer to NDK, has the best independent bookshops (Helikon, Ciela) and the outdoor stage in front of the National Palace of Culture where every Sofia festival ends up. Turn around at NDK for the postcard view of Vitosha mountain framing the whole street.

This is your evening walk. Come around 18:00 in summer when the light softens and cafes fill; earlier in winter. A coffee on a terrace costs $2-4, a beer $3, dinner at one of the boulevard restaurants $12-20 per head. Skip weekends around 20:00 if crowds bother you — the street is packed. For cheaper food, duck into Ivan Vazov side streets. Many of Sofia's under-$50 hotels sit within two blocks of this street; if you are staying budget, this is likely your local high street.
