What to expect at South Park (Yuzhen Park)

South Park runs for nearly two kilometres behind the National Palace of Culture (NDK), from the fountains at the northern end down toward the Boyana neighbourhood. Less formal than Borisova Gradina, it is where Sofia comes to run, cycle, walk dogs, drink beer on the grass in summer, and — on Saturdays — buy honey, cheese and vegetables at the biggest weekend farmers market in the city. Three artificial lakes, forested paths, open lawns, a children's play area and open-air fitness stations spread across 60 hectares.

Enter from the NDK end, past the huge fountains and the Statue of 1300 Years of Bulgaria (a Communist-era steel monument controversial enough that removing it took 20 years of arguments). The main path curves south along Fridtjof Nansen Boulevard. About halfway down, on the right, Sofians gather on the grass in the evenings with beers and takeaway from Vitosha Boulevard. The Saturday farmers market — Bio Bazaar — sets up at the northern edge, selling local honey, walnuts, Rhodope feta, sourdough bread and eco vegetables at prices only slightly above Zhenski Pazar and quality well above.

This is your quieter, greener alternative to Borisova. Come Saturday morning for the market and a walk after. Bring a beer in summer evenings and sit on the grass with the locals. The south end feeds into the wealthier Vitosha residential neighbourhoods where several of Sofia's mid-range hotels sit; if you are staying near NDK or Vitosha metro, this is your local park. The play area at the northern end is Sofia's best free family stop for small children.
