What to expect at Russian Church of St. Nicholas

The Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle-Maker was built between 1907 and 1914 for the Russian community of Sofia, and specifically as the private chapel for the Russian ambassador, who had refused to worship in a Bulgarian Orthodox church during a long ecclesiastical schism between Sofia and Moscow. Designed by architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky in classic Muscovite Revival style, it has five gilded onion domes, walls of glazed Ukrainian majolica tiles, and a bell donated by Tsar Nicholas II himself. Inside, it seats perhaps 80 people at most — this is not a cathedral but a chapel, and the intimate scale is what makes it magical.

Step inside and the effect is instant — deep blue walls painted with gold stars, an iconostasis that looks like a Fabergé object, and the smell of Russian church incense that is unlike Bulgarian incense. Downstairs in the tiny crypt, Archbishop Seraphim Sobolev, who died in Sofia in 1950 and was canonised in 2016, lies in a glass reliquary. Believers leave written prayer requests on his tomb; the letters are read aloud by a monk each week. There is often a queue of Russian Orthodox pilgrims from as far as Vladivostok waiting to touch the glass.

The church sits on Tsar Osvoboditel, the yellow-brick imperial boulevard, halfway between Alexander Nevsky and the National Assembly. It takes 15 minutes to see everything but the atmosphere lingers. Come on a weekday afternoon; Russian pilgrim tours dominate weekends. Photography is not allowed inside. The Ivan Vazov National Theatre and the City Garden are a two-minute walk south, useful for combining an outdoor coffee break.
