What to expect at Central Sofia Market Hall (Halite)
Halite — the Central Market Hall — opened in 1911, a stately neoclassical building with a clock tower on Maria Luiza Boulevard between the mosque and the synagogue. Renovated in 2000, it now houses two levels of food stalls, restaurants and small shops. Not the cheapest food in Sofia (Zhenski Pazar wins on price) but the highest quality: charcuterie, whole hams hanging from beams, artisan cheeses from Rhodope villages, Bulgarian wine specialists with tastings from $3 a glass, olive oil, honey, spices, and half a dozen sit-down restaurants where you can eat well for $10-15.
In the basement — a genuine surprise most visitors miss — are excavated remains of Roman Serdica: a section of street, mosaic floors, and a cluster of shops from the 3rd-4th century, all displayed under glass with English signage. The building has its own small piece of history: it was hit and briefly damaged during a 1944 Allied bombing raid on Sofia. The clock in the tower still keeps time and chimes on the hour.
Come mid-morning on a weekday to browse without crowds, or early evening for a wine tasting and shared plates at one of the ground-floor restaurants. Directly opposite the mosque and synagogue, three minutes from Sveta Nedelya, this is the natural first stop for a food-oriented walk of central Sofia. The wine shop Rustica on the ground floor offers three-glass tastings of Bulgarian reds for $6, an excellent introduction. Photography inside is allowed.
