When to visit Sofia-Grad
Sofia has four hard seasons. May, June and September are the sweet spots; July-August are hot; January is cheap and often beautiful.

Spring (April-June)
The best window. April can still snow on Vitosha but Sofia city hits 20°C by mid-month. May and June bring long days, cafe terraces, and Rila trails clearing. Book Rila Monastery bus a day ahead on weekends. Hotel rates sit near their lowest — Sense Hotel at $110, R34 at $42. Bring a light jacket for evenings; the city sits at 550m and cools fast.
Summer (July-August)
Hot and dry: 30-33°C most afternoons, cooler than Athens or Belgrade but no coastal breeze. Vitosha is your friend — 8 degrees cooler at Aleko. Nights are pleasant. Downside: the Seven Rila Lakes and Boyana are crowded on weekends, and half the Sofia locals decamp to the Black Sea coast, so some neighbourhood bakeries close for August. Book everything for the National Folklore Festival years.
Autumn (September-October)
Second sweet spot. September is warm, dry and stable — 25°C most days, cool nights. October drops to 15°C but the yellow leaves in Borisova Gradina are worth a trip on their own. Hotel prices stay low into November. Rila trails close in late October for snow risk; Rila Monastery itself is open year round.
Winter (November-March)
Cold and often grey. January averages -1°C but drops to -15°C in cold snaps. Sofia gets snow that lingers, and Vitosha ski season runs late December to March. This is when hotels drop 30-40% — Sense from $130 to $85, Arte from $95 to $65. If you like winter cities, cheap ski access and empty museums, come now. Bring a proper coat, not a puffer.
