Best sunset spots in Sofia-Grad
Sofia faces west across the Sofia plain toward the Balkans. Six spots that catch it well, from free park benches to $12 rooftop cocktails.
Sunset over Sofia rooftops from a rooftop bar with Vitosha in the distance
Free viewpoints
The steps of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral at 7-8pm in summer: gold light on the domes and every visiting photographer gets the shot. Ariana Lake in Borisova Gradina: paddleboats stop at 8pm but the walking paths glow. The upper terraces of NDK, Sofia's brutalist convention hall on Bulgaria Square: sit on the steps with a bottle of Kamenitza. The panoramic bench on Boyana road, above the church car park — 15-minute walk up, worth every step.
Rooftop bars
Sense Hotel rooftop on Tsar Osvoboditel: the postcard view of Alexander Nevsky, cocktails $10. Sky Bar at InterContinental on Narodno Sabranie Square: the highest terrace in central Sofia, $12 cocktails, book ahead in summer. Barkod on Solunska: cheaper at $6 a drink, casual, faces the wrong way at sunset but catches afterglow. Punto Caldo terrace on Vitosha Boulevard — decent light and $5 aperols.
The mountain option
The single best sunset in Sofia is from Aleko or Cherni Vrah on Vitosha — 2000m up, looking east and north over the whole plain and the Balkan range beyond. Only workable summer weekends when bus 66 runs, or with a car (taxi one-way $18). Bring layers; it drops 10 degrees at dusk. The gondola stops at 5pm most days, so plan the descent by car or the last bus.
