The core walk, free
Serdica ruins (open-air, free), Rotunda of St George courtyard (free), Alexander Nevsky Cathedral exterior and nave (free, only the crypt museum charges $5), Sveta Sofia Church exterior (free), the Presidency changing of the guard on the hour (free), the yellow-brick loop from Ploshtad Nezavisimost to Ploshtad Narodno Sabranie (free, and one of the most photogenic 2km walks in Southeast Europe).
Parks, springs, and views
Borisova Gradina, Sofia's big park: rose garden, Ariana Lake, joggers, chess players, all free. The mineral springs on Banski Ploshtad: fill a bottle with warm 46°C water, free, drinkable. Doctor's Garden behind the Cathedral: pretty, quiet, free. South Park in Lozenets: locals-only feel, free.
For a view: hike the Boyana Waterfall trail for the price of a bus ticket ($0.90), or ride tram 5 to the end and look up at Vitosha.

Free Sofia Tour daily at 10am, 11am, 2pm and 6pm from the Palace of Justice — two hours, tip $8 at the end. Free Communist Sofia tour at 3pm daily, same tip model. Sofia Graffiti Tour, tip-based, meets at Sveti Sedmochislenitsi. Sofia hosts free classical concerts in Alexander Nevsky Cathedral crypt occasionally — check the poster board at the entrance.
