Day trip to the Seven Rila Lakes from Sofia-Grad
Seven glacial lakes stepped down a Rila cirque at 2100-2500m. The full loop takes 5 hours; the top viewpoint takes 2.5.
Seven Rila Lakes seen from the ridge above the chairlift
Getting to the trailhead
The lakes sit above the village of Panichishte, near the Rila Lakes chairlift. From Sofia, drive 2 hours south to Sapareva Banya, then 15 minutes up to Panichishte. Public transport is slow; hire a car or join a group tour from Sofia ($40 with Traventuria, $150 private for two). The chairlift runs 8:30am to 5pm summer, $12 return, and drops you at Rilski Ezera Hut at 2150m.
The hike
From the hut, the standard route climbs 400m to the ridge above the Salzata (Tear) lake — the topmost — for the postcard view of all seven. That is 2.5 hours round trip, moderate, doable in trainers when dry. The full seven-lake loop descending past Bliznaka, Trilistnika and the others adds 2.5 more hours and is worth it. Total: 5-6 hours on foot including breaks.
Rilski Ezera hut serves bean soup ($4) and Bulgarian brandy ($2). Bring a windproof; the ridge is exposed.
When to go
Season is roughly late June to early October. Before mid-June, snow patches block the ridge. Weekends in July-August get crowded — 2000 hikers a day — so aim for Tuesday-Thursday. Storms build after 2pm; start walking by 10am. The lakes host an annual White Brotherhood gathering on 19 August; expect white-robed dancers by Bliznaka lake and full car parks.

The viewpoint hike is moderate. The full loop is longer but not technical. Fitness matters; altitude matters less at 2500m.
Not strictly. Walking up from Pionerska hut adds 90 minutes and 300m each way.
Only with a very early start and a car. Public transport makes it a two-day trip.
About $50 with a group tour, or $70 self-driving including fuel and chairlift.
