Day trip to Melnik from Sofia-Grad

Getting there
Melnik is a stretch as a day trip: 2.5 hours drive on the A3 Struma motorway, or 4 hours by public transport with a change in Sandanski. Realistically, rent a car ($35 a day from Top Rent A Car) or book a private day tour ($150 for two people). Buses from Sofia Central to Sandanski run 6 times daily, $12; from Sandanski, a taxi to Melnik is $12 one way.
What to do
Walk the single main street of Melnik, then hike 30 minutes up to Rozhen Monastery through the pyramids — one of the most beautiful walks in Bulgaria. Visit Kordopulov House ($3), an 1754 merchant house with a wine cellar carved 15m into the rock. Melnik's local wine, Broadleaved Melnik Vine, only grows here; tastings at Mitko Manolev or Villa Melnik cost $10 for six wines.
Combine with Rupite
If you have a car, add Rupite on the way back: a thermal pool at the foot of an extinct volcano, with Baba Vanga's memorial church. Entry free, hot pools $3. The whole day works out at 12 hours from Sofia and back, so leave at 7am and eat dinner en route in Blagoevgrad — try Bulgares on Alexander Stamboliyski, $18 for a full mezze.
